OWOSSO - A scruffy little dog that nearly got struck by an Owosso woman's van is among the four-legged stars in the new "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul."

The book features heartwarming stories about the unwavering loyalty and unconditional love dogs bring into people's lives.

Elisabeth Freeman's story centers on Snickers, a 4-year-old fox terrier that darts under Freeman's van on a cold, winter day.

The muddy pooch immediately charms Freeman's daughter, Melissa, who pleads to take him home.

Freeman reluctantly agrees, stressing it's just for one night.

Freeman admits she loves dogs but knows the types of messes they make - something she didn't want in her new house. But will she keep him?

The story is the latest to be published by the award-winning author.

In 2000, Freeman received the Writer of the Year Award at the Christian Writers Conference in Grand Rapids for her book about pornography, "The Pictures That Destroy The Mind."

This year she also won the Distinguished Achievement Award through Guideposts Sweet 16 for her bi-racial story called "In Black and White."

"God is my inspiration for writing," she said.

Freeman, 40, grew up in Owosso but never graduated from high school.

She became a teenage runaway, the plot in her upcoming book, "Run for Your Life." The book, published by A Time to Heal Ministries in Grand Rapids, will hit bookshelves in late October.

In November, Freeman also will have two stories coming out in "Hope Lives On," published by Obadiah Press.
